Operation status and timeliness changes of China-Europe and Central Asia trains

Nov 08, 2023

In general, the China-Europe freight trains in the 45th week showed that the overall timeliness of the China-Europe freight trains was stable and upward, and delays were significantly reduced. In the European direction, freight trains shipped from domestic stations can arrive in Mara, Poland in 12-15 days, and then transfer to most destinations in Germany and France in Europe in 15-17 days. In the direction of Russia, it takes an average of 14-15 days to arrive in Moscow via Alashankou and Horgos. Only a few cabinets experienced long delays due to special reasons such as inspection and customs clearance.

Port dressing situation:

The efficiency of reloading at various railway ports has been further improved. Alashankou and Horgos maintain a customs clearance speed of about 3-5 days; Manzhouli and Erenhot can successfully change clothes and leave the country in the fastest 7 days, and it takes 7-14 days when the queue is long. In addition, blizzard weather occurred in the eastern and northern areas of Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces this week. It is expected that the replacement speed of the Manzhouli port may slow down, and the actual impact will be further observed.

Positions and freight rates of key routes this week

Recently, the railway import and export container transportation market has picked up slightly, and transportation demand has increased. At the same time, at the end of the year, the freight train companies controlled the deployment of transport capacity, and the number of freight trains was reduced. Many lines experienced tight space, and freight rates stopped falling and increased.

European routes:

Outbound - The supply of cabins is relatively tight, and many platforms have sold out their cabins in November. Yiwu has a short-term "full warehouse", and East China's supply flows to surrounding areas. Although the booking price of Xi'an express trains is generally about 20% higher than the average price of regular trains, all the cabins are fully booked by the end of November. The shipping spaces on Chengdu, Zhengzhou, Chongqing, Jinan and other platforms have also been released into the second half of the year, and the spot market freight rate fluctuates around US$4,000-4,500.

Return - European return fares remain stable with little fluctuation. For goods returning to European cities this month, train slots destined for Xi'an Free Trade Port, Zhengzhou, and Yiwu have been filled. Changsha has a small amount of shipping space, and Dalian and Jinan have sufficient shipping space.

Russian route:

The Russian direction has experienced a small upsurge this week, with spot freight rates rising on a large scale. Price increases on platforms such as Chengdu, Xi'an, Chongqing, and Changsha range from approximately US$300 to US$500. Due to planned reductions, the overall cabin capacity was tightened in November - most routes in Wuhan, Shenyang, Hefei, Jinhua, Ganzhou and other places are already full.

Central Asia Route:

Freight demand is stable and the overall market is flat. Most platforms have released their shipping slots in mid-to-late November. Xi'an's trains to Almaty, Tashkent and other places this month are collecting goods. The latest "Xi'an-Baku" cross-sea transportation line is scheduled to depart on the 5th and 25th of this month, and the first train has been shipped successfully. Due to planned reductions, Zhengzhou space has been sold out. Mianyang and Luzhou, two cities around Chengdu, plan to have Central Asia freight trains operating as scheduled.

Container rental market situation:

Supply and demand in the container rental market were stable last week, but container freight rates fluctuated. Prices in Malaszewicz, Lodz, Warsaw and other places are still changing rapidly, but they have been relatively flat compared with the previous two weeks. Prices in the Russian direction have "dived" this week, with rental container prices generally falling by US$50-100. For example, the Tianjin-Moscow price has been reduced by 3%; the Ningbo-Minsk price has been reduced by 6%; the Chengdu-St. Petersburg price has been reduced by as much as 15%.
